Washington Watermelon Weigh In

The 3rd annual Great Pumpkin Commonwealth watermelon weigh-in in Washington, Arkansas was held Saturday August 31st.  The weigh-in attracted seven entries and several "exhibition" melons.  Several hundred people attended the event which was sponsored by the Old Washington Farmer's Market and the Hope/Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce.  Honorable mention went to Colby Daniels of Arkadelphia with a 146.6 pound melon.  3rd place went to Mike Daniels of Arkadelphia with a 174.7 pound melon.  2nd place went to Lloyd Bright with a 191.8 pound melon.  Bright lives in Arkadelphia but grows his melons at the family farm near Hope.  The winner was Barbara Bright Jones of Bossier City, Louisiana with 196.3 pound melon.  That melon was grown near Hope.  Over $1,000 in cash prizes were awarded to the winners.
