Historic Church Destroyed by Tree

One of the oldest church buildings in Hempstead County apparently was demolished by a tree falling. The building stood at the junction of Highway 73 and the Yancey Road in Columbus. Built in 1867, the building housed a Presbyterian congregation until World War II. Following the war it was used by the Methodists until about 2001. Only the facade of the historic building was left standing.
